Illegals Taking More and More
Jobs
Last summer, 40 or 50 carpenters from Local
1305, the Fall River chapter of the New England Council of
Carpenters, didn't work at all. Ron Rheaume, the business
manager for the union, said that means about 10 percent of the
union's 500-strong work force couldn't find any jobs for the first
time in recent memory.

The High Cost Of Cheap Labor
This study is one of the first to estimate the total
impact of illegal immigration on the federal budget. Most previous
studies have focused on the state and local level and have examined
only costs or tax payments, but not both. Based on Census Bureau
data, this study finds that, when all taxes paid (direct and
indirect) and all costs are considered, illegal households created a
net fiscal deficit at the federal level of more than $10 billion in
2002. We also estimate that, if there was an amnesty for illegal
aliens, the net fiscal deficit would grow to nearly $29 billion.

workforce would increase the summer-fall supermarket prices of fresh
fruits and vegetables by about 6 percent in the short run and 3
percent in the intermediate term. During the winter-spring seasons,
prices would rise more than 3 percent in the short term and less
then 2 percent in the intermediate term. Imports would increase
about 1 percent.
